One of the most interesting and revealing aspects of Elon Musk's new book by Walter Isaacson speaks to something called "Elon's Algorithm". This algorithm has created 10x to 100x efficiencies in his businesses and drove his engineers mad, pushing them to either hit a breaking point or thrive. While this approach is quite extreme, there is no question that it can yield results that are thought to be unimaginable. One of the most phenomenal results was getting his Tesla factories a few years ago to produce 4,000 cars per week when most of the car manufacturing field thought that even 1,000 cars was pushing it. Imagine what we could accomplish if we applied Elon's Algorithm to our creative endeavors:
1. Question every requirement: Make sure that every task, To-Do item, meeting in your calendar, or action you take is fully tied to the most important parts and KPIs of your business.
2. Delete as many parts as possible: Of the things you are working on, start deleting tasks until it makes you uncomfortable to only be left with the ones that will truly push your business and KPIs to success. A good rule of thumb is that if you are not adding 10% of those tasks back later, you are not deleting enough.
3. Simplify and Optimize: After the first two steps above are completed, think outside the box before you start each one to see if there is a way to do it faster, or simplify it. For instance, if you are looking to implement an authentication scheme for your app, maybe you can stop to think whether using Auth0 or Firebase could make your life much easier/faster in the long run.
4. Accelerate Cycle Time: So you tried to simplify the tasks and got some improvements, and you have done tasks like these before. Now, before you start the tasks, try to spend a little bit of time brainstorming to see how you can do the tasks faster next time around.
5. Automate: This step only applies after having done a task many times and having a clear path forward - knowing that the task needs to stay, and the only way to truly make progress is to completely automate it. Remember that this step should happen last, because if we try to automate from the beginning we are bypassing important aspects of Elon's algorithm and we could get stuck in a suboptimal state by automating things that are either unnecessary or ones that require too much ad-hoc tinkering.
