One of the most important and underrated skills of creating a successful project is communicating about it. Your landing pages, e-mails, support conversations, pitches, introductions, marketing copy, and everything else require you to be a good writer.
Here are some great tips to remember when it comes to writing about your project:
-
Your first sentence or statement will always be the most impactful - make it count. Draw people in.
-
Less is better - focus on short and impactful rather than verbose.
-
Be honest, be you, and don't exaggerate - people resonate with honesty more than exaggerated facts these days.
-
Focus on what you can do for your customers, specifically - E.g. We help employ 10,000 workers in developing countries.
-
Use the active and direct voice instead of the passive voice - E.g. We will release this feature tonight (good) vs. This feature will be released by us tonight (bad).
-
Use understandable words instead of buzzwords - think about how you would explain your product to your grandma. Think about how you talk - write this way too.
-
Be a maverick with your statements and don't be afraid to go against the grain. Be edgy instead of trying to please everybody.
-
Make sure content is properly formatted with the right spacing, headings, bold fonts, and other ways to create space in the text and make it more understandable.
-
Avoid adjectives and adverbs and be more direct and trite with your statements instead - Nobody cares if your plugin seamlessly and effortlessly works with that new browser, people only care that the plugin works with the browser.
-
Write a memorable story instead of just spewing facts - I am guilty of this in this post :) - Don't do what I do here, or not always anyway.
